We are the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit that relies in large part on a community of supporters and members to further our mission of expanding the appreciation and knowledge of and scholarship on Italian modern art, for both an American and international audience.

We launch an extraordinary exhibition every season that introduces under-appreciated and often unknown artists and artwork to our audiences, borrowing top-tier works from museums and collections here and abroad and installing them in a light and elegant space for nine months. And we accompany the exhibition with programs throughout the season, bringing in scholars, writers, and artists to illuminate the art or discuss their own practice.

Each year CIMA hosts four fellows whose research focuses on Italian twentieth century and contemporary art. We offer them the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, gain access to the incredible research and networking resources in New York City, and interact with a community of art-lovers by offering public guided tours of our annual exhibitions. And we promote and disseminate their research by publishing their papers in our online journal, Italian Modern Art. CIMA also promotes scholarship by supporting two additional Italy-based fellowships.

CIMA is truly a special place, a refuge, unique in a world that is often more focused on trends than on artistic quality and excellence. It’s a place to enjoy the pleasures of slow looking, in which “the exhausted urbanite can withdraw to look, contemplate, and love.”*

All of these activities are critical to our goal and have been furthering our mission for the past five years — and they all take a significant amount of resources. Your support helps us fulfill our mission to promote the study and appreciation of Italian modern art through public programs, special events, our fellowship program, and of course our annual exhibition.
